What is a pump track?

A pump track combines the rolling jumps and turns of a BMX track, the flow of a mountain bike track and the rhythm of a skate park to create the ultimate outdoor playground suitable for everyone. Pump tracks are made up of rollers and berms which teach the basic skills of balance, carrying momentum and creation of speed by using your arms and legs to pump your bike, scooter, or skateboard around the track.

Who is a pump track for?

Everyone! Not just for tamariki - for the inner child in us all. With a sealed surface, our pump track would welcome more than just bikes, and because momentum is generated from the body rather than gravity, you can adjust your speed to suit your skill level

Getting into nature

Being in natural places and playing outside is good for everyone. Nature is an important place for children to grow and learn and is a great basis for imaginary play which helps develop social, cognitive and physical skills.

The location

Oakleigh Street car park offers a central and accessible place on the hill. It is a gateway to Belmont regional park, has toilets, and parking—making it easy for the whole community to enjoy.

Community benefits

[team]

A pump track brings people together, encourages active play, and creates a safe space for kids and families. It can boost local pride, support healthy lifestyles, and offer a new way to connect with neighbours.

Social benefits

[team]

A pump track provides a safe, supervised space for young people to practice skills and stay active instead of sedentary or risky activities elsewhere. It also encourages cycling and active commuting for both children and adults.

Where will it go?

The Oakleigh Street entrance to Belmont Regional Park would be a great spot. This location is central to many suburbs on the hill and ticks all the boxes:

  • Existing infrastructure with parking and toilet facilities.
  • More than enough space for a pump track big enough to be exciting.
  • Other nearby play and exercise opportunities in Belmont Regional Park.
  • Public transport to and from the location.
  • Space for further expansion for other play areas in the future.
  • The exact location would be worked out during planning and design.
